As the recent drops in the Feed in Tariffs for Solar PV have happened there is a common misconception that it is no longer worthwhile.
This is the opposite from the truth as the panel manufacturers have more than halved the price of their panels in the last 12 months. Therefore for a typical home, the cost of a good quality installation can vary from £6,500 to £8,500 depending on the type, quality and appearance of panels (previously £13,000 – £14,000).
A year ago the annual return was up to £2,000 and people were getting their money back within 8 ? 10 years.
The great news is that although the annual return is around £950, people are now getting their money back within 7 – 9 years as the cost of installations has dropped so dramatically.
The returns are greater for larger installations on commercial properties as the Feed in Tariff has not dropped as much as for smaller domestic installations.
We now know that the Feed in Tariffs are going to drop further ? 3.5% on 1st November for example and then 1st February, 1st May and every 3 months thereafter.
This is countered by the rising cost of electricity a 9% rise by Scottish and Southern was announced in August ? an average increase of £119 per household per year.
